Protect PDF

What password protection needs and how to apply it safely.

What Pdflify can and cannot do here

Adding real password encryption means writing encrypted PDF security handlers. The browser library we use can read documents but does not write encryption, so Pdflify will not pretend to lock your file.

1. Use your PDF reader's protect feature

Adobe Acrobat, Foxit and macOS Preview (File → Export → Encrypt) can all set an open password.

2. Export with a password from Word

Word's Save as PDF dialog has an Options → Encrypt with a password checkbox.

3. Mark the document instead

If you only need to signal confidentiality, /tools/add-watermark/ stamps every page.

No fake processing. This page does not pretend to convert your file. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is generated here.

Frequently asked questions

Is Protect PDF free to use?

Yes. Every tool on Pdflify is free and needs no account.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool reads and rewrites your file inside your browser tab using JavaScript, so the document itself never leaves your device.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The workspace is responsive and works with touch, though very large files depend on your device's memory.

What if my PDF is password protected?

Encrypted files cannot be opened in the browser. Open the file with its password in your PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, then try again.
